STEP FOUR
Build Your Resume
Today employers have more choices. Organizing your
“Track Record Dates” in a way that properly communi-
cates your message is highly important.
The bottom line is that you must communicate the truth
about your commitment to a position or company. Are
you someone who jumps from one job to the next, or
when you make a commitment, you stick to it? Employ-
ers want to know this as they are investing time and
money when they choose to hire someone. At best, losing
a new hire costs them only money; sometimes it costs
them their competitive edge.
It is true
you may be the most committed person you
know and still become a victim of circumstance, and
your track record may suffer as a result of it. For instance
three years ago you started with a company that folded just a year later; then you
started with another company and it too was bought, and the new management
laid you off; and the last company you were working for shipped their call center
to India. So now your resume shows three jobs within three years.
This can be easily corrected. In this particular instance one thing is for sure: we
want to communicate the years you spent gaining experience in the feld and not
how long you worked for each employer. This does not best communicate your
character traits if you are someone who is committed and focused by trait.
Communicating three jobs within three years may miscommunicate your actual
work ethic, because it defocuses from what is most important:
“skills you possess and how they translate to success for the employer.”
