STEP FOUR
Build Your Resume
T
h e t r a c k r e c o r d i s t h e a r e a o f
your resume where an employer determines your years
of experience (pertaining to the position they are looking
to fll). Employers like to see a reasonable track record
of success in that feld, yet showing too long of a track
record is not always recommended. A person who has 20
years of experience in a certain feld can create the im-
pression that either he holds outdated experience or that
the same job was repeated twenty times.
Therefore how you communicate your track record on
a resume determines the level of motivation you create
for the reader. Remember that you and you alone con-
trol what you communicate to the employer. Some job
seekers are under the false impression that being hon-
est means communicating everything. I delivered pizza
when I was a teenager. Do I communicate that on my
resume when applying for a position of Operations Man-
agement? And if I did, how does that help the employer
identify my skills relating to the position of operations
management?
The responsibility is on you to communicate those skills that best describe your
candidacy.
The general rule of thumb is “No more than two jobs within the past fve years.”
Although this rule seems to change as the employment landscape shifts. No em-
ployer wants to hire someone who jumps around. This demonstrates lack of focus
and commitment to an assignment.
