article telling you how to create the resume of your life. If
you are reading this, you probably used the Internet to obtain
some of this information.
And we are accustomed to trusting information we see in
print, because traditionally, other forms of media (newspa-
pers, TV, radio) were required to verify their facts and cross-
check every article prior to publishing it. Today, anyone with
a computer and access to the Internet can post anything with
little accountability. And you have no shortage of advice on
the Internet. This information is not held to the same stan-
dards as other forms of media.
Interestingly, everyone who has looked for employment or
has held a job as a hiring manager at one time sees himself
or herself as somewhat of an authority on the subject, ready
to share an opinion. This well-meaning advice—much of it
suspect—often ends up confusing the average job seeker.
That is precisely the reason I don’t blame you for being skep-
tical about the volume of information you continuously en-
counter on how to pursue employment successfully.
You are now forced to ask: “How do I know if the informa-
tion is relevant or useful? How do I know if it works?”
