You may have invested so much time already using meth-
ods that promised success and found yourself just wasting
your time.
So how do you know if information you hear or see works?
Always refer to your common sense.
Someone sent me a link the other day that featured an ar-
ticle suggesting that networking is a hype and not important
when looking for employment. I forwarded him fourteen
other links to articles (from CNN, Newsweek, Los Angeles
Times), all suggesting the contrary, outlining the impor-
tance of networking when looking for employment. How
can you tell which articles to believe? With every piece
of information you see, you’ll also fnd its rebuttal online.
No matter what one expert says, another expert contradicts it. Which expert’s
opinion do you believe? The frst one you saw? The one that opposes it? An-
other one entirely?
Rely on your common sense. Don’t believe articles that tell you networking is
important, or believe those that tell you it is not. What do you think? Is net-
working really important?
In fnding the best talent for their organization, employers today have the fol-
lowing choices. They can either look for the right person by reading thousands
of resumes, or they can build a network and receive referrals from the net-
